Insurance

Understanding insurance coverage for psychotherapy can feel complicated. Here, you’ll find practical information to help you understand and navigate your psychotherapy coverage.

Psychotherapy Insurance Coverage

As a Registered Psychotherapist in private practice, my services are not covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). Psychotherapy is therefore paid for out of pocket or, when available, may be covered fully or partially through an extended health benefits plan. These plans may be provided through an employer or purchased privately.

Checking Your Insurance Coverage

Extended health benefit plans vary considerably by provider and plan. Some plans include coverage for psychotherapy services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist (RP), while others may only cover services provided by certain mental health professionals.

Before booking, I recommend reviewing your benefits or contacting your insurance provider to confirm that Registered Psychotherapist (RP) services are included in your plan.

How to Check Your Coverage

You can confirm your psychotherapy coverage by reviewing your benefits booklet or online benefits portal, or by contacting your insurance provider directly.

When checking your coverage, look specifically for Registered Psychotherapist (RP). If you are contacting your insurer, you can ask:

“Does my plan cover psychotherapy services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO)?”

You may also want to confirm:

  • your annual coverage limit
  • reimbursement percentage
  • per-session maximum
  • whether a referral is required
  • when your benefits renew

Insurance Reimbursement

If your plan includes coverage for psychotherapy services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist, you may be able to submit your psychotherapy receipts to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

Insurance coverage and reimbursement decisions are determined by your insurance provider and individual benefits plan. Clients are responsible for the full cost of services, regardless of the amount reimbursed by their insurance provider. Depending on your individual plan, your insurer may cover all, part, or none of the session fee. Any portion of the fee that is not covered by your insurance plan remains the client’s responsibility.

Direct Billing

Direct billing may be available through select insurance providers. When available, I can submit eligible claims directly to your insurer on your behalf, reducing the amount you need to pay upfront.

Direct billing is offered as a courtesy and may not be available for all plans or claims. Availability may change or be discontinued at any time. Clients remain responsible for any amount not covered by their insurance plan.
